Aeolian Hall (London)

Before this site became a concert hall, it served as the Grosvenor Gallery, a space that inadvertently sparked a revolution in urban utility. In eighteen eighty-three, the gallery owner Coutts Lindsay installed an electrical generator in his basement to light his art collection, accidentally creating one of the earliest electrical distribution systems in London. Neighbors soon paid him to tap into this power, though the resulting fire hazards eventually forced him to abandon the venture and sell the building.
