When it opened in nineteen oh seven, it was immediately unpopular with wealthy local residents who viewed the Underground as a nuisance that would attract the working class to their elegant neighborhood. Because they refused to sell prime land on the main road, the station was tucked away on a quiet side street, requiring passengers to navigate inconveniently long, deep tunnels. Trains frequently skipped the stop altogether, and by nineteen thirty-two, it was shuttered permanently.
