The Royal Institution on Albemarle Street was founded in seventeen ninety-nine, but it became so popular that it inadvertently changed the layout of Mayfair. The influx of horse-drawn carriages arriving for scientific lectures caused such severe traffic congestion that the local authorities were forced to designate Albemarle Street as the first one-way street in London. You are walking down a road that was redesigned to accommodate the sheer volume of people flocking to see the latest discoveries in natural philosophy.
