Physical Energy Statue

The bronze statue you see depicts a nude figure mounted on a rearing horse, shading his eyes with one hand while scanning the horizon. The artist, George Frederic Watts, spent over twenty years refining the original plaster model, driven by his desire to capture an allegory of human vitality. He described the work as a symbol of the restless physical impulse that pushes humanity to seek out the still unachieved. Though he was primarily a painter, Watts considered this sculpture the culmination of his public work, famously insisting that it be gifted to the nation for permanent public display.
