Sussex Square, London

Sussex Square serves as a quiet garden square in the heart of Paddington. Its name honors the Duke of Sussex, who was a younger brother to both King George the Fourth and King William the Fourth. While the area was laid out as part of a grand urban plan for this district, known as Tyburnia, development here did not actually begin until 1840. Winston Churchill lived at number two Sussex Square during the early nineteen twenties. A blue plaque marks the site where his home once stood, although the original building was later demolished. The square underwent significant transformation in the twentieth century, and today, you will find no buildings here that predate 1933. This stands in contrast to many neighboring streets that still retain their original nineteenth-century stuccoed facades.
