The Argyll Rooms began in eighteen hundred and six as a converted wing of a grand mansion once owned by the Duke of Argyll. Colonel Henry Greville, a man notorious for his charm and his inability to manage money, bought the property for a mere seventy pounds. He transformed the space into a high-society hub designed to rival the city's most exclusive venues, and soon the fashionable elite flocked there for masquerades, balls, and theatrical performances.
