Gielgud Theatre

You are standing before the Gielgud Theatre, a building that carries a century of theatrical history behind its elegant Louis the Sixteenth style facade. When it first opened in nineteen oh six, it was known as the Hicks Theatre, named for the actor and manager Seymour Hicks who commissioned its construction. Its early years were defined by a spirited, almost frantic energy, including a production in nineteen thirteen titled The Clock Goes Round that tempted fate by opening on Friday the thirteenth with a cast of exactly thirteen members; predictably, the show closed after just thirteen performances.
