The Sondheim Theatre on Shaftesbury Avenue originally opened in nineteen hundred and seven as the Queen's Theatre. Designed by architect William George Robert Sprague, it was built as a pair with the neighboring Gielgud Theatre. For decades, the venue hosted legendary performers including Fred Astaire and Marlene Dietrich. During a nineteen forty air raid, a German bomb struck the building directly, destroying the facade and foyer. It remained closed for twenty years before undergoing a significant reconstruction that replaced its Edwardian front with a modern design.
