Clarence House

Clarence House was commissioned by the Duke of Clarence, who later became King William the Fourth. When he ascended to the throne in eighteen thirty, he famously refused to move to the larger Buckingham Palace, preferring the comfort of this house instead. To maintain his connection to the nearby state apartments at Saint James's Palace, he ordered the architect John Nash to build a direct, private passageway between the two buildings.
