Duke of York Column

The Duke of York Column stands over one hundred and thirty-seven feet tall at the end of Waterloo Place. When the Prince Frederick, Duke of York, passed away in eighteen twenty-seven, he left behind staggering debts that reached into the millions. Because of his dire financial state, Londoners at the time joked that the towering column was constructed specifically to hoist him high enough to escape his many creditors.
