Equestrian statue of Earl Roberts, London

The bronze equestrian statue standing before you depicts Field Marshal Frederick Sleigh Roberts, one of the most celebrated and successful commanders of the Victorian era. Known affectionately to his soldiers and the public alike as Our Bobs, he was a defining figure of the British Empire, having served in conflicts ranging from the Indian Rebellion to the Second Anglo-Boer War. The sculptor, Harry Bates, captured him here in the distinct uniform he wore during the Second Anglo-Afghan War, complete with a sun helmet and the traditional Afghan outer garment known as a poshteen.
