The Chateau Marmont mimics a Loire Valley castle, complete with turrets and balconies clinging to the steep hillside above Sunset Boulevard. In nineteen twenty-nine, apartment developer Fred Horowitz commissioned it as a luxury residence for the wealthy, modeled after the Chateau d'Amboise in France. It survived the Great Depression by becoming a hotel, eventually drawing a mix of film stars and writers who retreated behind its thick, soundproof walls to avoid the public eye or escape the pressures of the industry.
