The Comedy Store

The Comedy Store features a heavy, dark wooden door set into a low-slung, cream-colored building on the Sunset Strip. Sammy Davis Junior once owned the property, but in nineteen seventy-two, Mitzi Shore took over the lease. She transformed the space into a sanctuary for stand-up comics, famously refusing to pay performers for years. When the comedians went on strike in nineteen seventy-nine, they picketed the building until she finally agreed to change the payment structure for those who took the stage.
