The Sunset Tower Hotel rises as a vertical stack of stepped concrete, featuring relief carvings of airplanes, cars, and zeppelins along its facade. Built in nineteen thirty-one, the building became a home for movie stars seeking privacy above the bustle of the Sunset Strip. John Wayne lived in the penthouse for years, and Bugsy Siegel kept an apartment here as well. The architect, Leland Bryant, intended the Art Deco structure to project the glamour of the early film industry against the steep hillside.
