The Viper Room is a small, black-fronted club on the Sunset Strip. It gained a dark reputation in nineteen ninety-three when actor River Phoenix collapsed and died on the sidewalk outside from a drug overdose. Before that tragedy, the venue hosted Johnny Depp, who co-owned the club, and regular sets by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers. The space served as a private enclave for the Hollywood elite during the nineties, shielded from the tourists just a few feet away on the busy boulevard.
