Stanford Red Barn

The Stanford Red Barn stands out with its bright crimson paint and sprawling gabled roofline, a landmark of the university’s agricultural past. Leland Stanford built this structure in eighteen eighty-eight as the centerpiece of his world-class horse breeding farm. He obsessed over the mechanics of horse gait, hiring Eadweard Muybridge to capture the animals in motion here, an experiment that effectively birthed modern motion pictures. Today, the barn functions as a working equestrian center for the university, housing dozens of horses.
