The Cantor Arts Center holds the largest collection of Auguste Rodin sculptures outside of Paris. Its facade features the arched colonnade of the original nineteen ninety-one Stanford Museum building, which survived the nineteen oh six earthquake with severe damage. The center exists because the Leland Stanford Junior family intended to memorialize their son through a university museum. When the quake hit, the building sat in ruins for decades until private donors financed a massive reconstruction to reopen it for the public in nineteen ninety-nine.
