Stanford Mausoleum

The Stanford Mausoleum sits inside a grove of oak trees, distinguished by a heavy, temple-like structure built of sandstone and granite. It serves as the final resting place for Jane and Leland Stanford, and their son, Leland Junior, who died of typhoid fever in Florence at age fifteen. After the boy’s death, the Stanfords committed their fortune to the university that bears his name. They spent their remaining years obsessively building the campus, frequently visiting this spot to sit in silence.
