The Pink Lady Mural

The mural you see here is known as the seventh Painted Lady. While the famous row of historic Victorian houses across the park is celebrated for their nineteenth century architecture, this mural on the corner of Steiner and Grove Streets introduced a contemporary layer of San Francisco culture to the neighborhood. Painted by artist J. Manuel Carmona in 2019, the mural features the drag icon Juanita More and her beloved French bulldog, Jackson. It was the winning entry in a public art contest and was specifically designed to highlight local advocacy for diversity and the history of equality in the city. The project served as a tribute to the GLBT Historical Society, using its prominent position near one of the city's most photographed landmarks to draw attention to the society's mission and its ongoing efforts to secure a larger space for its museum collection.
