Winterland Ballroom

You are approaching the site of the former Winterland Ballroom, which once stood at the corner of Post and Steiner Streets. Long before it became a legendary rock venue, this massive structure opened in 1928 as the New Dreamland Auditorium. Built for a staggering one million dollars, the arena functioned primarily as an ice skating rink that hosted everything from professional ice shows to boxing matches and opera performances. By the late 1930s, it had taken on the name Winterland, a title that would eventually become synonymous with the heartbeat of San Francisco's rock and roll history.
