Roxie Theater

cultural

The Roxie Theater stands as the oldest continuously operating movie house in the United States, with roots dating back to the early twentieth century. Throughout its long life, the building has operated under many different names, beginning as the Poppy Theater in the nineteen-tens before cycling through titles like the Gem and the Gaiety. This constant reinvention mirrors the changing face of the Mission District itself, moving from a neighborhood nickelodeon to a German-language cinema, and even serving as an adult theater in the late nineteen-sixties before finding its current identity as a hub for independent film.
