Rainbow Crosswalk (San Francisco)

The bright, multicolored crosswalks at the intersection of Castro and Eighteenth streets serve as a permanent fixture of this neighborhood. They were officially installed by the city in October of 2014 as part of a larger streetscape improvement project. Before the final design was chosen, more than four thousand residents participated in a public vote to select the pattern. While other options were considered, including designs inspired by the Castro Theatre and historic municipal rail cars, the community ultimately selected the vibrant rainbow.
