Twin Peaks Christmas Tree Point

This prominent overlook gets its name from a spectacle that began here in nineteen twenty-seven. The San Francisco Examiner newspaper decided to erect a massive one hundred and twenty foot fir tree on this spot as a holiday promotional stunt. The tree was so large that it had to be cut down in Mendocino County, sliced in half, and transported to the summit in pieces. Workers then reassembled the trunk with iron collars and drilled holes into the wood to reattach the branches by hand. For a few years, this artificial forest monarch was illuminated with thousands of lights and stood as a landmark visible from across the bay.
