You are arriving at Twin Peaks, two prominent hills near the geographic center of San Francisco. Early Spanish settlers once called these peaks Los Pechos de la Chola, or the Breasts of the Indian Maiden, for their distinctive shape. Before that, the native Ohlone people used these heights as a vital lookout and hunting ground. Today, the peaks stand as a natural divide that dictates the city's microclimates, acting as a barricade that forces the thick coastal fog to split, often leaving the eastern side of the city in sunshine while the west remains shrouded in mist.
