Sutro Tower

Sutro Tower is a giant three-legged broadcast structure that pierces the San Francisco skyline from its perch on a hill between Twin Peaks and Mount Sutro. Standing nine hundred and seventy-seven feet tall, this massive lattice of steel was built in nineteen seventy-three to solve a notorious problem for the city. Because of San Francisco's dramatic, hilly topography, television reception throughout the Bay Area was historically poor and inconsistent. By concentrating the transmitters for major local stations in one high-altitude, unobstructed location, the tower finally provided residents with reliable broadcast signals.
