San Francisco Police Department Park Station bombing

On the evening of February 16, 1970, this station became the site of a lethal attack that remains officially unsolved more than five decades later. Shortly before 11 o'clock, a homemade pipe bomb packed with shrapnel, including dozens of sharp industrial staples, detonated on an exterior window ledge just as the graveyard shift completed its roll call. The blast was specifically engineered to spray metal into the sergeant's office, and the resulting shrapnel struck Sergeant Brian McDonnell, who died from his injuries two days later. The explosion also left eight other officers wounded, some with permanent injuries like partial blindness, and caused significant structural damage to the building. Witnesses at the time reported seeing a pink and white van speeding away from the scene immediately after the blast, but no suspects were ever arrested, leaving the tragedy as one of the most enduring mysteries in the history of the San Francisco Police Department.
