The Steinhart Aquarium in Golden Gate Park owes its existence to two wealthy Bavarian immigrant brothers, Sigmund and Ignatz Steinhart, who made their fortune during the Gold Rush. Long after their deaths, their shared dream materialized into a scientific institution that opened its doors in nineteen twenty-three. While the brothers remain central to the aquarium's identity, the reason behind their specific obsession with funding a world-class aquarium remains a historical mystery to this day.
