The California Midwinter International Exposition of eighteen ninety-four was born from a singular, ambitious gamble. Publisher Michael de Young conceived the idea during a visit to the Chicago World's Fair in the summer of eighteen ninety-three and set an opening date for just six months later. Most civic leaders initially dismissed the timeline as impossible, but de Young pushed forward, turning a massive portion of Golden Gate Park into a sprawling, vibrant exhibition space in record time. He intended to showcase California's mild winter climate to the rest of the nation, providing a sunny alternative to the freezing temperatures felt back east during the country's economic depression.
