In the nineteen sixties, the San Francisco Mime Troupe began holding spontaneous guerrilla theater performances on this grassy slope to bypass city permit requirements. These gatherings quickly attracted counterculture icons like the Grateful Dead and Janis Joplin, who used the hill as a natural amphitheater for free, unannounced concerts. The site functioned as an informal gathering ground where the rigid social hierarchies of the era dissolved during weekend-long festivals of music and poetry.
