WWI Memorial

You are entering a space known as Heroes Grove, a quiet woodland tucked away in Golden Gate Park that serves as a living monument to those lost in the First World War. In 1919, only months after the end of the conflict, an estimated 12,000 mourners gathered here to dedicate this fifteen-acre plot of coastal redwoods. Many of the attendees arrived dressed in black to pay their respects to the soldiers who had given their lives in what was then called the Great War. It was designed to be a permanent, breathing tribute, where the towering trees would serve as a natural cathedral for reflection.
