16th Avenue Tiled Steps

The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps are a mosaic masterpiece that transforms a steep, standard concrete staircase into a vertical journey from the ocean floor to the celestial heavens. At the very bottom of these one hundred sixty-three steps, you will find an intricate underwater scene teeming with fish and marine life. As you ascend, the imagery shifts through terrestrial landscapes before finally reaching the stars, moon, and sun at the summit. This visual narrative was designed by artists Aileen Barr and Colette Crutcher, who worked directly with the neighborhood to bring the concept to life.
