Gems and Minerals Unearthed

Gems and Minerals Unearthed is a specialized exhibition housed within the California Academy of Sciences here in Golden Gate Park. This gallery features nearly four hundred geological specimens from the academy's massive research collection, which contains millions of items gathered by scientists from across the globe. The display highlights the essential role these materials play in human life, tracing their use from Stone Age tools to the rare earth elements inside your smartphone. When you enter the gallery on the third floor, you are greeted by a massive native copper specimen embedded with dark rock. This piece is over a billion years old. Beyond the raw ore, the collection includes exquisite decorative objects and jewelry that demonstrate how human cultures have shaped and valued these stones throughout history. Some displays even feature fluorescent rocks that glow under invisible ultraviolet light, revealing hidden properties that remain unseen under normal conditions. This exhibition serves as a return to public view for a collection that spent more than a decade in storage. After the academy moved to this location in the early two thousands, following damage to its previous building from the Loma Prieta earthquake, these specimens remained largely accessible only to research scientists. The current installation brings these geologic wonders back to the public, offering a chance to see both iconic items from the institution's past and newly curated treasures that illustrate the dynamic processes of magma crystallization and mineral formation.
