Koret Children's Quarter holds a distinct place in American history as one of the country's first public playgrounds. When it opened in eighteen eighty-eight as the Sharon Quarters for Children, the site featured features that were highly unusual for the time, including carts pulled by goats and gentle donkeys for children to ride. The facility was designed with strict rules of the era, which notably prohibited men and older boys from entering the grounds.
