Hawk Hill

You are standing at Hawk Hill, an ecologically sensitive remnant of an ancient sand dune system that once defined the western edge of San Francisco. Unlike the better-known peaks in the city center, this site is a quiet, fragile habitat where the shifting sands have been locked in place by development. Because the city expanded over the dunes that once naturally replenished this hill with windblown sand, this area now exists as a protected island of native plants, including the rare San Francisco wallflower. Due to its extreme sensitivity to erosion and the need to preserve its unique soil, public access to this specific hillside is discouraged to ensure it remains a refuge for local species like the green hairstreak butterfly.
