Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove

Sigmund Stern Recreation Grove began as a rugged homestead in 1847 when a Maine family named Greene claimed the land. They transformed the wild landscape by planting eucalyptus trees in 1871 to stabilize the shifting sand dunes that once defined this part of the city. Later, in 1892, they built the Trocadero Inn on the property, a remote resort for people looking to escape the city. The resort eventually closed in 1916 because the owner feared the looming arrival of prohibition would attract bootleggers to his quiet getaway.
