Scottish Rite Masonic Center

The Scottish Rite Masonic Center on Nineteenth Avenue stands out from the surrounding neighborhood with its striking, smooth concrete exterior. The building is defined by a massive, prominent double-headed eagle emblem, a symbol deeply associated with the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry. This structure was purpose-built in the early nineteen sixties as a modern successor to the fraternity's previous, more ornate downtown headquarters. While the earlier temple on Sutter Street was built in a historicist style, this location was designed by architect Albert F. Roller to embrace a more contemporary aesthetic, providing a spacious and functional home for the local Masonic community.
