Twin Peaks Tunnel - West Portal

The West Portal station marks the western terminus of a two mile long engineering marvel that literally pierced a mountain to reshape the city. When this tunnel opened in February of nineteen eighteen, the land around you was little more than shifting sand dunes and vegetable farms. City officials and developers gambled that providing a direct, fast streetcar connection to downtown would turn this scrubland into a thriving residential district. They were right, as the area transformed from a barren wilderness into a dense, bustling neighborhood in less than a decade.
