Quintara Steps

The Quintara Steps are a defining feature of the Golden Gate Heights landscape, where the extreme steepness of the terrain forced city planners to weave pedestrian pathways directly into the neighborhood grid. Unlike the standard street layouts found in much of San Francisco, this area is defined by sharp inclines and rock formations that necessitated these distinct stairways. These specific steps are notable for their unique design, as they begin as a double track at the bottom of the hill before merging into a single flight about a third of the way up. Built around nineteen twenty-seven, they represent the original engineering efforts to connect this elevated, rocky ridge to the rest of the city before it was fully developed into the dense residential district it is today.
