Betty Sutro Meadow is a quiet, grassy pocket of open space nestled within the larger Mount Sutro area. It bears the name of a long-time San Francisco resident who lived to be one hundred and one years old. Betty Sutro was the wife of John Sutro, a prominent local attorney and descendant of the same pioneering family that shaped much of the city's western landscape in the nineteenth century. While the family name is often associated with the massive engineering projects and forests created by her grandfather-in-law, Adolph Sutro, this meadow serves as a more intimate testament to a woman who dedicated decades of her life to local service. She was a foundational figure for hospital volunteers in the city, spending fifty years on the board of what is now Friends of Laguna Honda and serving St. Luke's Hospital for over seventy-five years.
