Mount Sutro Open Space Reserve

In the late eighteen eighties, Adolph Sutro purchased this rugged hillside with the intent of transforming it into a massive botanical showcase. He imported thousands of eucalyptus trees from Australia, planting them across the slopes to create a dense forest canopy that remains the defining feature of the reserve today. These trees were originally intended to serve as a windbreak and a source of timber, but the forest eventually took on a life of its own, creating a private woodland sanctuary that rises directly out of the dense city landscape.
