Early Spanish settlers looked at these two prominent hills and named them Los Pechos de la Choca, or the Breasts of the Maiden. This name reflected their rounded, symmetrical appearance rising nearly one thousand feet above the landscape. After California became part of the United States, the area was renamed Twin Peaks to better suit a changing city. The two peaks, formally named Eureka and Noe, sit only about six hundred sixty feet apart and serve as the geographical center of San Francisco.
