Pink Triangle Park

Pink Triangle Park is the first permanent, free-standing memorial in the United States dedicated to the homosexuals who were persecuted and murdered by the Nazis during the Holocaust. It opened in 2003 and stands as a physical site of contemplation. The park features fifteen granite pylons, each inlaid with a pink triangle made of quartz, which serves as a solemn reference to the badges of shame that prisoners were forced to wear in concentration camps. The entire site is oriented toward Harvey Milk Plaza, directly connecting this memorial to the local history of the gay rights movement. Visitors to the park are often invited to take a small rose crystal from the central, rock-filled triangle as a personal token of remembrance.
