The Castro Camera and the Harvey Milk Residence

Castro Camera began with a ruined roll of film. In 1972, Harvey Milk and his then-partner Scott Smith grew frustrated when a local developer destroyed their photos, leading them to use their final one thousand dollars of savings to open their own photography shop at 575 Castro Street. The store was a simple retail space, but it quickly transformed into a neighborhood anchor for the growing gay community and a sanctuary for people moving to San Francisco from across the country.
