You are approaching the GLBT Historical Society Museum, which stands as a landmark of queer history in the heart of the Castro. When this museum opened its doors in January 2011, it became the first stand-alone museum of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender history and culture in the United States. Its existence marks a significant achievement, as it transformed a small space into an internationally recognized center for public history, often referred to by locals as the queer Smithsonian.
