Jane Warner Plaza sits at a critical intersection where Market, Castro, and 17th Streets collide. Before it became this permanent public square, the site was a temporary experiment under the city's pavement to parks project. The community quickly embraced the space as a vital meeting point, leading to its permanent status and a formal dedication in 2010. It is named for Jane Warner, a San Francisco patrol special police officer who walked a beat in this neighborhood for two decades. Locals knew her as Officer Jane, a presence who balanced firm law enforcement with a reputation for helping struggling young people she encountered on her rounds. She served the community until her passing, and the city chose to dedicate this plaza on what would have been her fifty-fourth birthday.
