Pink Triangle Memorial

The Pink Triangle Memorial at the intersection of Market, Castro, and 17th Streets is the first permanent, free-standing monument in the United States dedicated to the LGBTQ individuals who were persecuted and murdered by the Nazi regime. Dedicated in 2001, the site is anchored by fifteen granite pylons, each standing five feet tall and topped with a pink granite triangle. These fifteen pillars serve a specific purpose: each one represents the loss of one thousand lives, symbolizing the estimated fifteen thousand men sent to concentration camps under the Nazi's anti-homosexual laws.
