The Alfred E. Clarke Mansion, known historically as Nobby Clarke's Folly, stands as a four-story, multi-towered monument to an ambitious and controversial figure. Its builder, Alfred Nobby Clarke, arrived in San Francisco as an Irish cabin boy in 1850 and eventually climbed the ranks of the city police department. He amassed a fortune of two hundred thousand dollars during his decades on the force, largely by operating a lucrative and usurious money-lending business for fellow city employees.
