Mount Olympus (San Francisco)

You are standing at a site once designated as the geographical center of San Francisco. In the late nineteenth century, this hilltop was entirely barren, offering an unobstructed three-hundred-and-sixty-degree view of the city, from the sand dunes of the west to the quiet rooftops of the Mission District. Wealthy philanthropist and former mayor Adolph Sutro recognized the prominence of this location and transformed it into a landmark by donating a monumental statue here in eighteen eighty-seven. He titled the work The Triumph of Light, and it depicted a goddess of liberty holding a sword and a torch, positioned as a beacon to inspire citizens toward noble deeds.
