Carl Larsen Park sits on land once owned by a Danish immigrant named Carl Larsen. In the late nineteenth century, Larsen operated a chicken ranch on this site back when the surrounding neighborhood was primarily composed of vast, undeveloped sand dunes. He eventually transitioned from a rancher and carpenter to a prominent downtown restaurateur, owning the popular Tivoli Cafe. In 1926, he donated this property to the city, fulfilling his stated dream of creating a beautiful park on these hills for public enjoyment.
