Original Gap Store (1969)

historic

The first Gap store opened on Ocean Avenue in 1969 as a counterculture project designed to appeal to local teenagers and college students. Founders Don and Doris Fisher originally stocked the shop with only two items, vinyl records and Levi's jeans, to create a hangout space that bridged the generation gap of the era. The store occupied a corner of the historic El Rey Theatre building, where the brand's original logo featured multicolored concentric circles meant to mimic the spinning records sold inside. This modest storefront launched a retail strategy that replaced traditional department store racks with neat, cubicle-style shelving that made it simple for customers to find specific sizes. The business became an instant success, famously prompting Don Fisher to remark that the initial crowds were so large that shoppers could barely get inside the store.
